First Image A Drone flying over the Valley of the Shadow of Death, 2020

This image was created in 2020, during the period between the Russian annexation of Crimea and the war in Ukraine. It is a reworking of Roger Fenton’s In the Valley of the Shadow of Death —a photograph that remains a constant source of thought.

The work reflects on conflict, memory, and the traces war leaves behind. It engages with Ruben Pater’s The Drone Survival Guide —an instructional poster mapping military drones and suggesting ways to evade their detection—and draws inspiration from Peter Kennard’s The Haywain with Cruise Missiles (1980).

The photograph explores shifts in the representation of warfare, from early battlefield photography to contemporary systems of surveillance.
